There seems to be a lot of confusion between "moped" and "scooter".

The English name for the type of vehicle you describe is "MOPED". Originally this meant "MOtorized-PEDals".
Nowadays, a moped is any vehicle of less than 50cc with speed limited to 40kmh-25mph. Some countries require pedals others don’t and some require automatic transmissions while others don’t.

Small wheeled vehicles with (usually) enclosed bodywork are called "SCOOTERS". Scooters can also be mopeds, but not every scooter is a moped and not every moped is a scooter. A Mobylette is a moped, but it’s not a scooter and a Suzuki Burgman is a scooter, but it’s not a moped.

Hello. My friend and I are traveling throughout Brazil this July and will be in Rio De Janeiro for a little over a week. Last year my friends and I were in Hawaii and we found that renting mopeds for as little as $25 USD a day was a great means of transportation around the city. We were hoping the same could be said for Rio. Are mopeds used as common means of transportation and if so are they easy for tourists to rent. If yes, can anyone suggest where we should rent them?
