Earlier this year, some friends and I decided to go on a bike trip from where we live in the UK to Barcelona in Spain, about 2200 miles. I decided my old BMW was not up to the trip and needed to be replaced.

I have been riding bikes for many years and have had a good number of modern Triumphs, and have always been fascinated by the Rocket.

Sitting on it for the first time I felt somewhat nervous as this thing is just so huge. The first thing I noticed was how comfortable it is. The seat is quite low, so you feel like you are sitting in it, rather than on it.

It was like the bike was waiting for me, menacingly, to start up and “take her on”. I turned the key, pulled in the clutch, and pressed the starter button.

The 2.3 litre engine burbled into life. I engaged first gear, noticed the shift was surprisingly light, and gently let out the clutch.

Given the low seat and overall design of the bike with the engine running parallel with the gearbox, Triumph has done a remarkable job. Low speed stability is second to none, and the balance is fantastic.

Triumph deliberately wanted the bike to have some “character”, so the engine is not as smooth as say, my Honda Blackbird, nor, like the Blackbird, does it feel like it wants to take off all the time.

Unlike my Blackbird, which reaches peak power around 7000rpm, the Triumph’s 140bhp peak low down, around 2500rpm. The result means that whilst the Honda keeps pulling and asking for more throttle as you pass 90mph in third gear (which I find annoying sometimes as you feel like it’s never relaxed), the Rocket is happy chugging along at 50mph, without making you feel like you have to keep winding it up.

Obviously this is a very heavy bike, but that works to its advantage in that it feels incredibly stable at speed, and once the tyres are scrubbed in it corners well and eagerly.

Cornering is good, but if you try and corner like it’s a GP bike you are going to have a problem.

The Rocket is the ultimate in relaxed cruising, and I’m even looking forward to the twisting bends in Andorra!
