Gas powered scooters and mopeds have been around since the turn of the 20th century. Most early versions had step through frames and actually looked like bicycles with motors. Maybe that’s because that’s essentially what they were. These are what we would probably consider today as mopeds.
It was not until the 30’s that scooter manufactures started putting casings around the motors. Team that with an automatic transmission and you got the look and feel of what we think of today as scooter. Let’s take a quick look at some of the more popular manufactures of scooter today.
#1 The Vespa Scooter Manufacturing Company — These came roaring on to the seen in Italy after WWII and are one of the most well known scooters today. They have many models to choose from and are always considered a very hip-trendy scooter to ride.
#3 Honda Scooter and Mopeds — Leave it to Honda. The world’s largest producer of engines was in the scooter market long before they entered the auto market. The Super Cub has still sold more units worldwide than any other scooter in history. They have had 100’s of different scooter types in just about every country imaginable.
******The Silver Wings can get you going over 100mph with its 582cc engine.
******Available only in Japan, the Helix tops out at just over 70mph.
#3 The Yamaha Company — The Zuma and the Vox are the two popular scooters from Yamaha. The Zuma is a little big with a top speed in the mid 40’s and the Vox, known as the C3 in the states, doesn’t quit hit 40mph.
#4 The Suzuki Scooter Company — Suzuki has two of the more expensive scooters you will find on the market. They are sold under the Burgman tag and come in a 400cc and 650cc engine.
All of these scooters are good on fuel efficiency, so don’t shy away because of the speed that some of these can get up to. Remember, they are small so they are both light and fast!
