What are the names of those bikes that are really awful mopeds with no power that really young people can ride?

by admin on August 5, 2009

I want to get one next year (the age is 14 here in switzerland) and want to know what they are called and the price for one new. They are the mopeds with pedals on them but still have a small engine

You mean one of these:

There seems to be a lot of confusion between "moped" and "scooter".

The English name for the type of vehicle you describe is "MOPED". Originally this meant "MOtorized-PEDals".
Nowadays, a moped is any vehicle of less than 50cc with speed limited to 40kmh-25mph. Some countries require pedals others don’t and some require automatic transmissions while others don’t.

Small wheeled vehicles with (usually) enclosed bodywork are called "SCOOTERS". Scooters can also be mopeds, but not every scooter is a moped and not every moped is a scooter. A Mobylette is a moped, but it’s not a scooter and a Suzuki Burgman is a scooter, but it’s not a moped.

The Italians made a bunch of them. So they have names which do not come to mind. But a Yahoo search for moped will get you a long list. Here in the USA there is a few motorized bicycle conversions that work well, but you would need lower gears for Switzerland. Most are Chinese.
They cost here about $400 new and you can get the whole bike for $200 used. Try and find a bike with disc brakes because going is not their problem.

Hondas. Lol. JK. When I hear the word moped the only one that comes to mind is Vespa. With their low level of performance and obvious simplicity I wouldn’t think they were very expensive at all.

WE call them liquor sickles. Once you get a DUI you don’t need a drivers license for one so that’s what they get to go to work and back.
